Tutorial - Recycled Origami Boxes!

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Growing up, I did a lot of origami. My grandmother taught me the crane and with those basic folds, I began teaching myself from books. Most of the books were in Japanese... and I don't read Japanese, so it was quite an undertaking. But I always had the basic things that I could easily teach someone else. This box is one of them ~ although I've added a little twist to make it more sturdy. I just recently made one of these because I needed a box to send one of my items in. Not having small boxed, I decided to make it myself. While I was making it, I thought it might be a fun tutorial for my blog! I've been wanting to do a tutorial, I just didn't know what.

Anyhow, I made mine from the comic page of the newspaper (because that's what was near me at the time), but you can use almost anything. I wouldn't go with any paper heavier than computer paper... although a paper grocery bag might work nicely - I'd imagine it to be a bit harder to fold, but the end result would be nice and rigid. You will have to experiment.

Materials you will need:
  • 2 - 8 x 8 papers (need to be a perfect square)

  • 4 - pieces of cardboard (thick cardboard like a shipping box) cut to 1.25 x 2.75"

  • 2 - pieces of cardboard cut to 2.75" x 2.75" (optional)

  • scotch tape (this is to make it easier when you are first learning... it can be omitted as you perfect the technique)
Step 1 - Fold one of your 8 x 8 squares in half (see picture 1). Be sure to crease all folds really well. Open it, turn the paper and fold it in half the other direction. Open it again and you should not have two folds crossing in the center of the paper.
Step 2 - Fold the paper again in half, this time diagonally (see picture 2). Open and repeat on the other side. Now when you open the paper you should have four creases crossing in the center. One vertical, one horizontal, and two diagonal (see picture 3).
Step 3 - With the paper open, fold one corner into the center of the paper (see picture 4), which is now marked with the crossing of the previous creases. Repeat this for all four corners (leaving them folded)

Step 4 - Fold one side of the paper (corners still folded into the center) to the center crease (See picture 5).

Step 5 - Open (it should look like picture 6). Repeat on all four sides (should look like picture 7).
Step 6 - Open all folds until it is back in it's original 8 x 8 shape. You should now have a grid of folds (see picture 8).

Step 7 - This is where I have modified it a bit. I taped (made a scotch tape loop on the back) four card board pieces into place. When you get good at the folding, you can just hold them in place rather than tape them. Be sure to place them in the rectangles that are toward the center of your grid (see picture 9).

Step 8 - Fold the corner over one of your cardboard pieces and then fold the piece so it is standing up (see picture 10).

Step 9 - Repeat step 8 on the opposite side while still holding the other side up (see picture 11).

Step 10 - All folds will be on creases that you have already made. Holding both sides up, fold the third side up. Tucking the sides of the fold into the cardboard piece and along the diagonal crease (see picture 12). This is the most difficult fold. While you are folding along the diagonal, you will have to re-crease this fold as you are folding it in the opposite direction. Hope that doesn't confuse you. (should look like picture 13).

Step 11 - Tuck the corner down into the center of the box (see picture 14).

Step 12 - Repeat step 10 & 11 on the opposite side (see picture 15). You now have the bottom (or top) of your box! You can tuck the 2.75 x 2.75 piece of cardboard in the bottom to keep the bottom folds down and to make it a little more rigid.
Step 13 - Repeat the whole process again with the second piece of 8 x 8. Eliminate step 7 and do not put card board pieces inside the wall of the box as this will make it too bulky and the top boxes will not fit inside each other. Notice in the picture to the right that the box in my hand is more flexible on the sides than the one on the right.
Step 14 - Put one box inside the other. In the last picture, I have shown you one box with the cardboard pieces on the top (the one on the left) and one box with the cardboard pieces on the bottom (the one on the right). The box I made in this tutorial has the cardboard pieces on the top (it's just how it fit together best. You can play with the size of your squares and make one slightly larger if you want a better fit.
Given that this is my first tutorial, I'd love to hear feedback. Is there a step that is confusing? Are you having trouble going from one step to another? Have I missed something in between? Are the photos helpful at all? I'd love to hear from you!
Happy recycling!

Puget Sound Indie Arts in Edmonds - Part 1

Tuesday, April 29, 2008

So the EtsyRAIN street team, Puget Sound Indie Arts (PSIA), will be holding their first every Craft Show next weekend on Saturday, May 10th. While there are some artists in the group I have yet to meet, I do know many of them. I can't wait to meet those that I don't already know. So, what better way to get to know all the artists that will be at the show than to do some quick features each day.

So, here it goes... in no particular order... (I apologize for the formatting issues I'm having with this blog).
*~*~*~*~*

Kristen Friesen is the talented artist behind two great Etsy stores; Sweeter Than Me - Bridal and Sweeter than Me Designs. If I hadn't already been through the whole wedding thing... I'd definitely get my jewelry from her Sweeter Than Me - Bridal store. Her pieces are beautiful, unique, and eye catching. All the qualities you would want on your wedding day.

Her other store, Sweeter Than Me Designs is a great collection of your everyday jewelry. Don't mistake that for ordinary though... this jewelry is just a beautiful and unique as her bridal collection. Many of her pieces can be worn both with casual attire as well as formal. My current favorite is the Adrenaline bracelet pictured. I love the citrus yellow separated by the silver loops.

I look forward to meeting Kristin in person next weekend. Stop by and grab one of the free gift bags for the first 50 people, Kristen has contributed items to some of the bags.
*~*~*~*~*
Any seller that uses recycled materials grabs my attention. Not only because it's green and good for our planet... but because it's a great indicator of creativity and innovation. Weaving one is one of these sellers. Not only does she have a fabulous name - Junk to Funk-tion, but she also has great looking bags, coffee cozies, rugs and more!

The bag that I've pictured is sold... but I love it and just had to include it in this feature. This is a prime example of innovation... I love the cable handles. How cool is that? The bottom is also a hard bottom (recycled wood sign) and held together with silver upholstery tacks. I'm in awe of the innovation... and I'm a bit sad that this sold. However, I know she will continue to offer new, innovated bags just like this and perhaps one day I'll own one. Of course, that day probably isn't until the kids are a little older and my wardrobe doesn't consist mostly of sweat suits :)
Another seller that I can't wait to meet at the PSIA Craft Fair next weekend. I also need to mention that I love, love, love her contributions to the free gift bags we are giving away to the first 50 people through the door.
*~*~*~*~*

I'm not sure she knows this, but I first heard of Beth and her slings when I briefly joined a meet-up group last year. Because it was an eastside mom's group, I was never able to match my schedule to their meet-ups. Fast forward several months and I notice she's part of the EtsyRAIN group.

I've not tried Beth's pouches, but I have heard great things about them... and her 400 sales on Etsy supports everything I've heard. If you are having a baby soon, know someone having a baby... or maybe you already have one, you will want to come check her out.
Like most Etsy sellers, she makes more than just one thing... look at the cute little shoes that she also makes! She makes them custom for just $25!

I feel like I already know her a little bit... but another seller I can't wait to meet. Oh, and I believe she will also be a vendor at the other show I'm doing in Mill Creek.
*~*~*~*~*
Okay, now for a seller that I know. I know this seller very well as her son and my son are best friends. I encouraged Cindy to join Etsy after I saw her many crocheted creations. She makes some beautiful shawls for both children and adults (my daughter owns one). She uses great colors and textures along with great designs to make unique and fun shawls.

Among many other things, she makes some really cute reversible dresses. These are her own design and she makes them in a wide range of sizes. I know she's going to have a great selection of these at the craft fair on May 10th.
These are children's items, but she also has some great items for moms... and the show is the day before Mother's Day! Cindy has also contributed some great crochet items to the free gift bags.
Have I mentioned that all these fabulous sellers and more will be in Edmonds on May 10th? Oh... and I'll be there too! Have I also mentioned that free Gift Bags will be given to the first 50 people through the door? Okay, I'm sure I have... but there will also be give aways every hour from the many members of PSIA. It's going to be a great time... don't miss it!

Going Green!

So in a previous post I had mentioned many ideas I have formulating in my head that utilize recycled clothing. My first attempt at a summer dress for my daughter made from two t-shirts came out a bit big. But, for the most part, I'm happy with the result. There are a few things I'll change in the next one such as adding two more sections in the skirt so that the middle front scallop is centered... bringing in the arm pit area and maybe making the skirt a bit shorter.

I've also finished another scarf top. This one fits her - yay! She is wearing it today paired with white jeans. So fashionable! Again, there are things about it that I'm unhappy with... but nothing you can see from a distance. I think this one was a success.

I can't wait to make up more of my ideas and try to iron out my issues on these. I suppose I should have made a pattern. I really need to focus on the show coming up next weekend though. But it's so hard with a bunch of ideas swirling around in my head.
Check out flickr for more pictures of the dress and top!

Fond Memories

Buttons. I love buttons. They remind me of this store my mom used to take me to in Downtown Salinas. It was a fabric store and on the second floor, they had a bin of buttons. (I think the store is still there, but not the bin of buttons). All the buttons were loose... it was like a sensory table full of various shapes, colors and sizes. I loved to just move my hand through them. I loved to search through them for just the right button. Perhaps this was the beginning of my button fetish.

I now have several containers full of buttons. They are all organized by color to make it easier when I was making my Color I-Spy Bean Bags (reminds me that I really need to make more of them). But really, there is no way that I can use that many buttons... or make that many I-Spy Bean Bags. So, I decided to come up with something else to do with them.

I've been looking for tacks for my bulletin board. I didn't want anything boring and ordinary... so I made some tacks with all my buttons! I love them!... and I've listed a few sets in my On A Whimm store.

You should also search Etsy and see what other fun things people have done with buttons. Here are just a few...

Where have I been?

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Well, over the weekend, we had around 10 inches of snow (in the middle of April!) and due to the cold and wet conditions, I did not go to the craft fair. Not attending the fair has put me into a little bit of a funk. I was really looking forward to it and I had put a lot of work into getting ready.

But, I think I'm finally over that. But I still haven't been in the mood to get back into sewing. I have lots of fun ideas coming up... but I needed a break. So, I changed my focus to my kids. They seem to have a way of pulling me out of my funks. I've been spending more time with them... and crocheting while they play in the same room (I often don't play correctly... so it's easier for me to sit on the sidelines and contribute only when I'm asked).

This summer we will be going to California for my husband's family reunion. We are really looking forward to it... except for the heat. We will be in one of the hottest areas during the hottest time of the year. I'm thinking cool. So, I've been working on some summer dresses and tops for my daughter. Now, I just learned to crochet in December and I've never followed a pattern... but for some reason, I have convinced myself that I can crochet the tops of dresses for her. So far, I've been happy with the results.

But then, Earth Day comes along and of course, I am again inspired to do my part. So the summer dresses are evolving. I'm utilizing old clothing and can't seem to make them as fast as the ideas are coming. I'm only allowing myself to do this for a week as I really do need to get back to the website. But I am having a lot of fun switching gears, being a little green and making things for my daughter. Who knows... if I can work the patterns out to where I'm happy with them, I might make some of my recycled clothing for my OnAWhimm site. I'll keep you posted. For now, here's the latest top I made for Lyssie. It's a little big for her (would fit a 3 year old well)... but I really like how it turned out. I picture it worn with jeans.

Update: seem to have problems adding photos to blogger. I'm working on it, but if you are curious, pictures on in my flickr account - along with pictures of the snow~

Creative Challenge - Alice in Wonderland

Wednesday, April 16, 2008

For the past several months, I've been "hosting" Creative Challenges" for our EtsyRAIN group (aka Puget Sound Indie Arts). This involves coming up with the inspiration for each challenge... and in the end, grabbing a treasury to feature the results. It's been a lot of fun. However, I've been so busy lately, that I haven't been able to partake in the actual challenge itself.
In between preparing for the upcoming craft show and worrying about the weather, I've found a little time to work on the newest Creative Challenge. The inspiration is Alice in Wonderland and I have created a Queen of Hearts Jingle Ball.

These are new items for me. The inspiration was a felted ball I saw a while back (I think it was in a book). It's been in the back of my head as something I wanted to try (and I still do). However, I am far to busy to pick up a new medium at this point. But I love the look of them. Then yesterday, I was riffling through my fleece scrap box making Scrappy Little Monsters when I had the idea to make the ball out of fleece and to hand stitch patterns on the fleece ball... making sort of a faux felted look.

I loved the way my first one turned out (balanced on Robbie's head). So, I made another one... this time enclosing a jingle bell (the felted ball I saw had a jingle bell inside). The kids loved it!

So I was excited today to make a ball inspired by Alice in Wonderland. I love the black, red and white that comes to mind when I think of the Queen of Hearts. So, I based my ball on elements from the Queen of Hearts. I love the result. I've listed it in my shop and hope to follow it up with more as soon as I get past this next show. Making these is simple and fun. As I was searching for an idea of what to price this little baby, I came across numerous tutorials on how you can make your own (most are made of cotton... but fleece sews up basically the same). I've also taken the time to decorate each one.
I've been knocking around ideas for a tutorial I can feature on my blog... and perhaps the fleece faux felted jingle ball would be perfect. Easy, fun and the result is very rewarding. Especially when your kids have a great time playing with it. These would make really fun and unique baby gifts. So, watch for a tutorial one of these days!

I Can Only Laugh

I'm sure by Friday night, I'll be crying. I have every intention of still going to the Renton Spring festival.
"Come celebrate Spring with Downtown Renton on Saturday, April 19, from Noon - 5 pm in the Piazza on the corner of S. 3rd Street and Burnett Ave. S. The 6th Annual Piazza Renton Spring Festival will be a lively event that includes live music, children's activities, food, Farmer's Market vendors and arts and crafts. You can also try your luck in the 3rd Annual Downtown Renton Poker Run from 12 p.m. - 4 p.m. (starting at the Piazza) and enjoy art at the open air Arts Unlimited Gallery in the park across Logan Ave. S. These events will be fun for the whole family. Free admission to all events, suggested donation (not required) of a can of food or $1 for the Salvation Army Food Bank to participate in the Poker Run."

Here is a description of the forecast for Saturday from Komo's website...
"Saturday, we're expecting near record low MAX temperatures with Lowland temps 10-15 degrees below normal. With those cold low to mid-40 degree temps plus a lot of moisture, we may see a mix of showers, snow, and hail. Oh, and a chilly breeze. A striking difference from last Saturday when our official high temp reached 79 degrees."

Although I have every intention of going... there's no guarantee that I'll be setting anything up. I have family coming into town tomorrow to help me out... I have everything planned that is within my control. Too bad I can't control the weather too. Be brave and come out to see us. There will be many other EtsyRAIN members braving the elements with me.

Tut tut - looks like rain!

Monday, April 14, 2008

Hoping for the best, planning for the worst. Weather forecasts here in Washington change from day to day, minute to minute. So this means that until Saturday afternoon, I'll be on the edge of my seat waiting to see if I am going to have to put all my contingency plans into action.

I'm one of those people that likes to plan for all possibilities. I take my kids to the beach... I have everything under the sun that we might need or want while there. Sometimes this means transporting unnecessary things. I'm sure Saturday will be no different. We found a screen for my canopy for a little protection. If need be, and the weather gets crazy (not out of the questions...and very likely), I have three tarps for each side. Yes, tacky... but I can't risk my things getting wet. They are washable... but I still prefer they remain crisp and new for their new owners.

King 5 is currently reporting that it will be partly cloudy (a little sun) and around 60 degrees. That would be the ideal day for me. This is why I'm fairly certain that is the exact opposite of what will happen. KOMO 4 is reporting scattered showers and high 40s. This is much closer to what will probably occur. Q13 reports that it will be breezy and in the high 40s. This scares me. I don't like the word breezy... especially when you are out in the open. Winds here get COLD!

Okay, so those are the reports so far. Which one do you think will be right? I'm betting on Q13, but am telling myself it'll be more like KOMO 4... and dreaming it will be like KING 5.

It's all good

Sunday, April 13, 2008

Okay, I'm sure I should have posted a follow up blog to my last one. Thank you to those that sent me kind words. I have been feeling much better these past two days. We worked out the display for next week, and although it isn't what I envisioned, it'll work and it can be a work in progress.

I received some nice feedback on a special order I did, so that also helped my mood. I love when people leave me positive feedback, it definitely helps keep me going.

When I first started on Etsy, I had no idea how difficult and time consuming it would me. But I also didn't know the great community I would be joining. It's a great balance... and I will continue to trudge forward. This is only my first year and I'm still building up an inventory. I'm sure once I get an inventory, things will get easier.

So now, please help me in praying for nice weather next Saturday in Renton. My booth does not have walls and my things can't get wet. I bought these ugly blue tarps if I'm in a pinch... but I'm hopeful that I won't need them.

Self doubt is a terrible thing

Friday, April 11, 2008

Every once in a while it creeps in to my life. I hate it... it's not welcome here. I'm not sure if it's my current struggle with medications, the fact that the medications aren't working, or just the self imposed stress of the upcoming craft fair... but I could really do without it.

I worry that people don't get it. In October, there was a costume contest on Etsy. I was excited as it was right up my alley. However, after winners were announced, I realized it wasn't my cup of tea. That's just not what I do. I don't make full costumes. I make accessories... peices that don't define, but that inspire. Pieces that can be mixed and matched to spark the imagination of kids. And perhaps that's the problem... I am gearing toward kids and kids aren't the ones buying.

But then I look at the amount of time I've been on Etsy and the amount of sales I've made. I'm doing pretty well. Especially since my 110 sales doesn't include the many pieces of the wholesale order. And I have only been on Etsy since July.

Currently I'm struggling with my display for this craft fair coming up in Renton. I had a great idea of how to display my crowns... a way that would not take up a lot of room in the booth and way that would set them apart. I ordered pieces a few weeks ago to make it all happen. Then we set up the canopy and I realized that my plan wasn't going to work. Not easily discouraged, I went back to the drawing board. I haven't really come up with much and the show is a week away.

To make things even more discouraging, the shelves I ordered came in yesterday. I pulled them out this morning... and they are huge! Much larger than I had first anticipated. I spent a pretty penny on those shelves and they aren't fulfilling my vision. It's disappointing to say the least.

And so I am back to self doubt. My mother and I have invested a lot of time and money into this whole endeavor. And while I enjoy what I'm doing (I like to believe she does too), I need some type of return. My previous three shows have been busts. However, I have blamed that on the amount of traffic that went through... which was none. But what if it's my product? Maybe people just don't get it.

It's all very discouraging. And so I push myself to sit at my sewing machine and I sew. Sewing makes me feel better. Creating makes me feel better. I am still hopeful that doing what I love will somehow lead me down the right path.

I'm not sure if this depressing blog is appropriate for here. But I figure that I'm documenting my journey. My ups, as well as my downs. Currently... I'm feeling down. I'm sure, with my swings, I'll be up again tomorrow.

He's a professional

Thursday, April 10, 2008

Robbie made it into the Etsy Children's Gift Guide with his silly photo modeling one of the crowns. It's a bit exciting to have made it somewhere on Etsy other than just my store. It means potentially more traffic without the big effort. Of course, I'm not sure how many people shop the gift guides this time of the year.

Anyhow, that photo was up for debate a few weeks ago. I wasn't sure if I should have made it my first photo since the crown is a little out of focus and he is sticking his tongue out at us. But I think it's a fun shot. So I was torn. I took my dilemma to the forum on Etsy and asked their opinions. While there were maybe one or two that were a little offended by it, most responses were positive and loved the whole series of pictures.

It isn't often that I get Robbie to sit down and take pictures for me. He is usually preoccupied and just wants to hurry and finish. With that listing, I captured him actually having fun. I think that's what makes the picture... and probably why it got picked for the Gift Guide (not to mention that my crowns totally rock!).

I'm always hoping to capture more of those fun photos... unfortunately when you have them model over a hundred things, they are bound to get tired of it. It's an ongoing challenge that I'm definitely up for.

You aren't going to want to miss this!

Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Saturday, May 10th, my Etsy Street Team, EtsyRAIN (aka Puget Sound Indie Arts) will be holding their first craft fair in Edmonds. This has been in the works for months now and everyone is contributing to making this a fun and successful event. If you are in the Puget Sound Area, I highly recommend stopping in... and if you can be one of the first 50 - even better!

We have set aside 50 swag bags (handmade by the group from beautiful rescued fabrics) that are stuffed full of great swag from many of the groups artists. From broaches, earrings, fancy bookmarks, greeting cards, pouches, playdough and so much more! Can't make it to be one of the first 50 - no problem! We'll be giving away a bag every hour!

The swag bags contain various artists from Puget Sound Indie Arts. Not all of them will be present at the show. Here is the list of vendors that will be at the show;

Sweetpeacardgifts - she's the organizer!
Worldofwhimm - that's me!
Baublesbyhand - she also has another shop - Itsmadeathome

It's a great mix of artisans - a little something for everyone! I've also seen many of these sellers wares... and nothing beats seeing them in person and holding them. My stuff included!

I'll blog more about the whole event and the swag bags as it gets closer to the event. It's going to be a great time... and I'd hate to have you forget and miss out.

Productivity can hurt!

Monday, April 7, 2008

I'm having to take a break from sewing for a bit. I just lanced myself under my finger nail with a pin... and it's bleeding. Ouch! It's probably a good thing. I'm feeling obligated to sew when I have a spare minute since I have the Renton show in less than two weeks.

I am in good shape though. I have about 9 mermaid tails (and plans for 3 more), seven Robin Hood hats (although I need to attach the feather), I have 9 tiaras (and everything ready to make 5 more), a bunch of crowns... I have no idea how many and some feathered headbands. I plan on making more of all those things, but that's the variety I'll be taking to this show. I might take a few of my costumes to display on the dress forms... but that's a last minute decision since those are all done and ready to go.

I am working on another peacock though. I'm excited about this one because it's different than the first one. Unfortunately, it isn't a priority since I don't really need it for the show.

Oh! I almost forgot, I also have a dozen or so Scrappy Little Monsters waiting to find new homes at the fair. My first one sold today. Grecado is on his way to his new home with Baby Ian.

Lots to do and I feel like not much time to do it. Perhaps I'll go make dinner while my finger continues to throb.

Fond Memories from Childhood

Thursday, April 3, 2008

Recently a fellow EtsyRAIN member, Baubles by Hand (aka Meghan), opened a new store. I am a big fan of her jewelry - they make a bold statement with class.

And her new store - It's Made At Home, is just as great! Currently, she only has one type of playdough available, but they come in a rainbow of colors (see photo). She sells them in 8 oz tubs either individually or in a set of 4.

Like Meghan, I also have fond memories of making playdough with my mom. I honestly wish I had more time to make it with my kids. Meghan's new store is the perfect solution! The wonderful feel of handmade playdough in no time at all! Check out her store... and watch for new items. I hear that she's working on some pretty wonderful things! I know I'll be watching!

Scrappy Little Monsters

I'd like to introduce you to my new Scrappy Little Monsters.

My work area is starting to close in on me. And much of it, I've determined, is my scraps. The more I sew, the more scraps I accumulate. And these are great scraps, I can't bear to throw them out!

So I had to come up with something I could do with them... and Scrappy Little Monsters were born! True to my nature, I don't have patterns for these little guys. I just cut them out and sew them together. They seem to take on their own personality as I'm sewing them and I really don't know what they are going to look like in the end. It's a very random process... which I think makes them even more fun!

Robbie has named each one of them. Please check them out in my shop! There is Flunny, Cuenonster, Grecado, Babberie and Spikoe. And as this hasn't even made a dent in my 3 boxes, 2 bags and one drawer of scraps... there will be more to come! I love when I find new projects that my son and I can collaborate on.

Creation Station

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

I LOVE this place!

Today I had to pick up some ribbon at Hancock's (by the way, not so nice again when I had the children). The only way I got Robbie, my little hermit, out of the house was a promise to Creation Station after I finished running errands. He took the bait!

I love this place. Sometimes I go to beef up by button stash, sometimes we go so the kids can create, and sometimes I go just for the fun of it. Today was a very successful visit. Not only had they just refilled their button bin, but I found some fabulous fabric pieces that I'm anxious to use. Lyssie got a scoop, Robbie got a few beads... and everyone left very happy.

Cost of such happiness? Just under $6.50!
