Never Say Never

Tuesday, January 29, 2008

I once told myself that would never have a "sale" in my Etsy store. I'm not sure why I thought this... but it didn't seem like something I'd need to do.

Well, I'm marking a few of my things down. Not because I need to... but because I'm in the process of organizing and I need the room. I also have tons of ideas... and just no room for them. While we are working on my storage issues, this seems like the quickest resolution. I'm marking a few of my costumes down. Nothing wrong with them... just really want to take the clothes rack out of the hallway!

I also have marked down a few of my older I-Spy bean bags. These bean bags use a thinner plastic that I am using for my new ones. So I've marked them all down to clear them out and make room for all my new ones.

So check it out! I'll be adding more as I come across them.
SALE!

Excited about new fabric!

Monday, January 28, 2008

One of my favorite things to do is to go to the fabric store. The only thing better than going to a fabric store these days... is going it alone without kids. I love to walk through all the different colors, textures and patterns and just absorb it all. It inspires me. Believe it or not, I sometime will even walk out without fabric! Okay, it doesn't happen often... but it has.

Lately though, I've found something that I like almost as much as going to the fabric stores. And it's receiving these supply boxes from my mom. She has some great places around her that are so different from here. And it's not like receiving an order of fabric online because 1 - I have no idea what is going to be in a box from my mom and 2 - her boxes almost always have more than just fabric! Sometimes I get yarn in various colors and textures, sometimes I get cool new buttons or beads, sometimes I get new trims... you just never know. And this is because my mom loves the fabric and craft stores just as much as I do!
I like to think that it's fun for her too. To send me a box of fabric and goodies and to see on the website a week or two later (I'm being kind to myself here), her goodies turned into something new and wonderful!

So, here are the latest fabrics she sent me for mermaid tails. I've been having a heck of a time finding any fabrics here that I liked for these mermaid tails that are growing to be more and more popular. It's made me a bit nervous. But, with this new batch of fabric, I am feeling reassured and inspired all over again! By the way, the photos don't do the fabrics justice (I'm not a photographer), but I had to share!

Snaps are not a snap

Saturday, January 26, 2008

I have my own unspoken rule (until now) not to use snaps. Snaps annoy me and hand stitched snaps annoy me even more. I always feel like they are going to come off. I haven't had one come off on me yet - except off of a store bought item, but they just feel like they aren't very durable.

So, I don't use snaps to secure my items. I prefer velcro, buttons, and any other creative way I can imagine to secure and item before I will resort to snaps.
But a few weeks ago, I happened across a package of No-Sew (yeah), Magnetic (even better) snaps. I thought I'd give them a whirl. Of course, I wasn't confident enough in them to use them for my kids items... so I put them aside for that random project that I so often come up with.

Tonight was the night! I decided to finally turn that sweater I found at the goodwill, into a bag. This is another one of my new favorite pastimes... finding discarded items and giving them a new life. Fun!

I cut up the sweater, sewed it all together - even knit handles for it and realized after I was done, that it really needed a closure of some sort. See, the sweater is a bit heavy and I made it a nice roomy bag, so the sides flop open. My first instinct was to do a button/loop closure that I'm so fond of - easy to open and fun to sew. Then I remembered my new snaps and decided tonight was the night!

I'd like to mention here that I dislike sewing notions that do not come with instructions. Of course, being the person I am, I told myself I didn't need them. They were just snaps and snaps should be a snap to put in. Right? Wrong. I'm sure it was a mixture of the late hour, my lack of knowledge and a teensy bit of stupidity.

I put the snaps in as I thought and was very disappointed. They didn't come apart easily and was very worried that they would tear the fabric. I was so disappointed. I figured it was another one of those prototypes that would never leave this house. I'm glad I didn't give into my disappointment. Instead, I went upstairs and googled No Sew Magnetic Snaps. I didn't find instructions, because all it took me was this little picture for me to realize my mistake. That little disc pictured... stuck to the packaging and I thought it was just something they used to keep the snap, I don't know, clean??? Plus, they painted it white (it matched the cardboard backing) and the snaps themselves are silver.

So, long story short... the snaps weren't a snap... but I finally figured it out and I love them! Now that I know how to install them, I'll be using them more often. Not for kids items yet though. They need to be tested for a long time before I make that leap. They would be great closures for costumes though... hmmmm.

So, I'll be posting the bag in my On A Whimm site soon. Oh - and I love the internet and the wealth of information we have at our fingertips!

I have to have that!

Thursday, January 24, 2008

I've tried to be very involved in promoting my Etsy site. The EtsyRAIN street team is by far, where I dedicate most of my time. One, because the group is so much fun and two, because I enjoy helping them promote their sites as much as I enjoy promoting my own. It's a very supportive community. So, when one of the members signed us up to help another street team, I was all over it.

I've already featured on of the Rhode Island artists, Spiderbite and today, I was searching around and I found another cool artist from the same group... Alamodestuff!

I totally want that "No Whining" pendant. After over a week with two sick kids... I need that. Of course, I think I'm beginning to whine just as much as them.
But Alamodestuff has so many other cool items! Are you in the market for a bag? She's got it - cool, simple, elegant designs! Or maybe you are working on a little interior design... don't forget those switch plates! How cool are those! No wait! You need a little inspiration... here it is!
So, check out her site! And don't forget to check out Spiderbite's site as well. You won't find those items at your local department store!

Cool and Unusual - Featured Etsy Seller

Monday, January 21, 2008

My work room is full of colorful and furry fabrics. So, it's really no secret that I'm a bit partial to the colorful and furry. Throw in useful and I'm all over it!

So, I'm online today, shopping through some stores... not really looking for anything in particular. Mostly just avoiding what I need to be doing. Then I stumble across "The Spiderbite Boutique". I love it!

In this shop you will find some very cool and unusual journals. Nightmare Snatchers are "Furry and fearless, friendly but ferocious" by their own creaters admission. What better way to jot down those spontaneous ideas, crazy dreams and random thoughts. I'm not sure which one is my favorite. It is Snargle? or Lomper? Maybe I prefer BeartyBouts because of the name.

Regardless, these things are just too much fun. What a great gift these would make! Check them out for yourself!

How did I find this shop? I was actually surfing through the Etsy Street Teams. Interested in more Rhode Island artists? Check out their blog!

Cotton Washcloths

Saturday, January 19, 2008

The past 6 months, I've become a little obsessed with yarn. I taught myself to knit with some online instructions. I was perfectly content with my limited knitting skills for about two months. Then I started searching Etsy and suddenly a whole new world opened up to me. The ideas started flowing!

I'm still not very good at knitting (I can only knit rectangular items), so I've moved on to crocheting. I had this idea and I really wanted a black crocheted hat to make it happen. So, I printed directions off the internet and took it with me on vacation in December.

I came home without a hat, but some experience in crocheting. I taught myself... and my mom corrected me. I worked on the hat for hours and hours - one came out too big, one came out way to small. In total, I probably pulled out five or six attempts at a hat. I became very good at making yamikas as my husband says. A yamika is great... but not what I was envisioning. So, I traded with Dawn, some of my yarn for her craftiness - her hat is beautiful. I hope to soon (within the next six months :)) have something to show for it. I'll keep you posted on this project as it starts to come together.

But now, I'm really loving to crochet. And I'm getting into the various types of yarn available. So, I decided that I really wanted to try out some cotton yarn and make some washcloths for the kids. I think it would be great if we could do away with the wipes we have to use on my daughter every night after dinner (she's a messy little girl). Of course, it will take me a while to complete this many... but I have my dreams. Dreams that we will be a wipeless household (well, except for the diaper ones. I'm just not that committed).

My son used my first one in the bath today. He loved it and I'm very excited to make more. I highly recommend them. They are soft and absorbant. But, I won't be offering them in my store. It just takes me way too long and I don't think anyone wants to pay $20 for a washcloth.

But, I found some Etsy sellers that do make them at reasonable prices. Check them out! Click on the image for more information or to buy them. These, by the way, are a bit fancier than mine. Mine are made with single crocheted and no pattern.

New Years "I will attempt to try" List

Friday, January 18, 2008

Yep, don't want to over commit. This is one of the wise things my husband says. It really drives me crazy when he says he'll "attempt to try". I think it's a bit like saying "yes, I'd really like to do that, but I don't see it happening within a time frame that would make you happy."

And this is how I feel about my list of things I feel I need to accomplish in 2008. I might be a step ahead of my husband though... because even though the odds are stacked against me (the odds consisting of two little children), I'm determined to accomplish all of these; some way, some how!

1 - Blog more! I love blogging both on my personal blog and on my crafty blog. I just don't always have the energy. Not to mention that I always have great topics to blog about... until I'm in front of the computer with two children hanging off me.

2 - Since I'm in the early stages of this business. Be organized! I can do it. I know I can. And I'm not so far into it that I have to competely dig myself out of a hole to get started.

3 - Be everywhere. Okay, not everywhere. But I'd really like to do some more local craft fairs this year. I did one, poorly attended one, and did well. So, I'm hoping going to a few that are attended by a reasonable amount of people... should be worth my time.

4 - Wholesale. At the end of last year, I gave up on this idea. But I get frequent enough inquiries, that I really needed to consider it again. I have worked this past week or two on developing something that I can work with. I'll be taking more of a cut than I'm comfortable with - but I'm trying to think of it as additional marketing for the store... getting my name in more places. I'm also sure that the seller will want their cut to be more... but they also need to remember that everything we make is handmade and often requires a lot of hand work.

5 - Balance my time effectively between crafting, family and home. That's a big one and the one I'm most concerned about.

So that's it! Seems simple enough, right. I can do it!... and I'll start tomorrow :)

Prepare Yourself to be Amazed!

Monday, January 14, 2008

It must be a new year... not only do I now have a beautiful new work area... but I actually followed through with my goal of organizing (now if I can just apply this to the rest of the house!).

I finally took the time to clear off the drafting table which was the last step in getting a photo of my new workspace. The drafting table (provided we keep it clear - it is the first clear surface when you walk in the door) will do double duty as a cutting surface for me and a drawing table for Kasey. Yipee!

I'm very excited that my productivity might increase and, no worries, my creativity is still just as strong! I still have to get photos of a few new items that I've been completed (the devil in one of the pictures is one of those items).

So, let me know what you think! I still have boxes stashed under tables... but I think that comes from having way too many supplies. Of course, the abundance of supplies is what inspires me :) For a before image, check out my previous blog!

Focus on photos

Friday, January 11, 2008

I know, I know, I'm supposed to share photos of my work area... but as soon as I have a few inches of work space, I started working. So, it's still not ready for a photo. But speaking of photos, I've decided that it's high time I focus on getting some decent photos in my shop. The shop is starting to look a little unprofessional and I think it has a lot to do with my quick snap shots that really don't show off the item.

So, I'm changing it up. I've decided to work on a flat surface (no more fabric) to see if it makes the picture a little sharper. My thought behind this is that I'm using fabric for my item, so the picture should be taken on something more solid so it can stand out. I'm not sure if my reasoning was correct, or if I just got lucky... but I like how my first few came out. I'm still not sure what I'm going to do about the costumes and the uncooperative models. That one has me a bit stumped.

So here is the before and after. What do you think?

Etsy for Autism

Monday, January 7, 2008

The Etsy street team is official, and I have officially posted that I will be donating 20% of each I-Spy bean bag sold to an Autism related charity (chosen by the street team) each quarter. Once I start producing more of them, I'll be heavily advertising them. I'd love to have a good size contribution by the end of this first quarter.

Also, I have finally chosen one of Siobhan's paintings. After returning and checking out her site, this one spoke to me. I can't wait to recieve it in the mail! It will be part of my new workspace as she inspires me!

I Surrender!

Tonight, I officially dropped out of one of my mom's groups. It's been probably 4 months since I've really made it to a meet-up and I don't see it improving anytime soon. Since I've begun selling on Etsy, my time is spent very differently now.

Conversing with mothers while chasing my daughter around the playground wasn't really my thing anyhow. I think after a 2 hours playdate, I'll have said maybe 10 words to 3 people. Unless you are in a confined space, I don't find toddler park playdates condusive to meeting others. But I guess that's just me. I suppose it was different with my son. I wasn't concerned he'd take a flying leap off the side of the slide or kamikaze off the top of the monkey bars.

So 2008 is already starting to take form. I'm certain I'll be very busy with the business, my son's schooling (current and future), and juggling the entertainment of my children with the responsibilities of a parent.

On a side note, my workspace is coming together very nicely. All furniture is in place and I'm half way through organizing. I just hope there is room for all that I need. Next will be the office. We are moving my husband's office upstairs to the guest room and we will need more shelves there for all his reference and drawings.
Here is a very before picture of the workspace... yep, I can only go up from there! Well, it could have become worse. In fact, this photo was taken after we had already moved a computer armoire out of the way. Imagine all the things I was able to stack on that baby!

Yes, I know... I should have been ashamed!

Happy New Year!

Saturday, January 5, 2008

A New Year... and a new me! Okay, not really... but I am strongly motivated to make some changes. The first... to get back to blogging. Both here and on my personal blog. I took a little heat back in California from my family as I haven't updated my personal blog in probably a month. No new photos of the kids means not so happy grandparents. Can't have that!

I've also decided that it's time to get organized! Today myhusband took me to IKEA where I spent a large chunk of my earnings and a little Christmas money on some new shelves for my workspace. I'll take some before pics (embarrassing) and after pics once we get to that point. The shelves will be delivered tomorrow and knowing us, it will take at least a week to build them. But I'm very excited! I also want to paint the room... but I know that's being a bit ambitious since I have no idea what color to paint it. We have been in the house for nearly three years and have yet to paint a wall.

I can't wait to see what great materials I have... to be able to find what I need... and to have space to sew! I currently have about two inches around my sewing machine clear... the rest has some sort of material, buttons, thread, shipping boxes, etc. covering the workspace. No joke!

My four new huge shelves are going to make a world of difference! I wonder if I can still be just as creative working in an organized environment? Hmmmm...

Oh! Also a good luck to Marlo (http://www.imakecutestuff.etsy.com/) who I ran into briefly at IKEA. She, too, is fixing up her workspace!

Stay tuned for pictures!
