Tackle it Tuesday - Water Bottles

Tuesday, March 17, 2009

This Tuesday, I've decided to tackle my growing stash of plastic water bottles. I've been recycling the caps into pincushions and it seemed wrong to not use the water bottle... so they've been building up around the house. I've decided it's time to start putting them to good use.

Last week I had posted about some onions that had sprouted in my neglected kitchen. Nora was so kind to respond and let me know how I could take advantage of these new sprouts. I didn't have any vases or jars the correct size. Just one plastic tea cup left over from my daughter's many tea parties and plastic bottles.

I did the plastic cup first and within a a few days, there were roots growing. Yay! So, I was motivated to find something to put my remaining two onions in. The plastic bottles were perfect.

I happened to have a lot of the Arrowhead ones which contour in slightly in the middle. I cut it off with a utility knife about 1/4 of inch below the label. I filled it with water so that the bottom of the onion would sit just slightly in the water... and voila! Okay, so these would probably look much nicer in a nice glass vase or something... and they would look nicer set in front of a clean window. But I haven't been feeling well lately and cleaning the window is just a bit beyond my current potential.

I also didn't waste the top part of those water bottles. The tops are now scoops in the button boxes (yes, I now have two as I've combined ALL of my buttons and it was too much for just one box). I freely admit that I have a button obsession... and I'm comfortable with that.

Being GREEN on St Patrick's Day!
