Onions

So - it was like an experiment. Bury onions on the counter under loads of towels, plastic bags, etc. Wait a month or so and see what happens.
Okay, really, I had forgotten they were there. My parents bought them when they were in town. I normally store our onions in the refrigerator because it makes it easier to chop them without tearing. So, the onions sitting out on the counter slipped my mind (this speaks volumes for the condition of my kitchen)... until green started to emerge. I'm glad it was this type of green and not another.
So, my question is. Can I plant them in the ground? How do I go about about it? Just put the bulb in the ground and leave the green part above ground? Is there a better way of going about it? I could use some help here. Plants are not my forte.

Kayce, if you plant the onion you'll get flowers and later seeds.
I had a large windows in our appartment in Glasgow and was always growing spring onions. It's easy, just stack an onion in a jar full of water. Match the jars to the onions so that the onions don't fall through, just seat deep enough to be 1/4" in water to grow roots. Put them next to the window and you can harvest the green shoots in 2-3 weeks. They also add nice touch to a kitchen especially in winter and spring.
what a great fun idea... I am going to have to try this.. my oinions dont have shoots yet.. since they are in the fridge too... but I am going to give it a shot... we will see what happens... if nothing else we can still eat it.. even if it doesnt grow.
