Muffin Tin Monday - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

Monday, August 10, 2009

Well, I got one out of three. I did a car (or, my attempt at a car... I asked Robbie if it looked like a car and his reply was "I like it anyway" - haha!).

Okay, so it's a jelly car sandwich with jelly wheels, clouds made from kettle corn, cottage cheese and string cheese circles. Grapes for grass, peanuts and wheat thins for dirt.

The kids won't eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... but the will eat peanuts. They don't know it - but I win because it's the same thing minus sugar :)

Yum

Friday, August 7, 2009

So, I'm on day 10 of the South Beach diet and I can tell you there have been very few days when I've been eating and I think "yum". It's not that what I'm eating is bad - it's just that it's a limited pallet and I eat the same thing over and over.

So, I was very pleased when I put this salad together (don't mind the tomatoes in the picture - no, I didn't eat them with the salad... I don't like tomatoes. Those just happened to come from the garden. Aren't they pretty?). So this salad is chicken that was sauteed with some bell peppers, edamame and almond slivers all on top of some crisp iceberg lettuce. I used a sesame dressing that we bought at Costco (slightly more sugar than I should have). It tastes awesome! I really like the addition of edamame to the Asian Chicken Salad.

Those tomatoes - I hope to make myself a little salsa. Not sure what I'm going to eat it with though as I still have 4 more days of no carbs.

As far as this health plan goes ( I don't like the word diet), I have mixed reviews. The purpose is to be healthier... and for the first 3-4 four days, I felt great! Then, I started to feel a bit off... I'm not sure how to explain it. Granted, it could have nothing to do with the diet and everything to do with the Fibromyalgia... so I'm trying to hold on just a few more days when I can reintroduce a few carbs.

I've been daydreaming about carbs and which ones I'll add back in. I think carrots or corn - from there maybe a piece of wheat bread... or a small bowl of rice. It's just so hard to decide!

I can't believe how green my diet has been lately. I never knew that there were so many green foods that I would willingly eat. I was a picky kid... not sure when I decided all these foods were good. Obviously though, it has caught up to me. I'm fairly certain that part of my discomfort through the day is from the foods I eat. I just hope I can figure out which ones they are.

For those wondering if the "diet" is working for weight loss... the answer is yes. I've lost 6 pounds in 10 days.

Look what I did today!

See those cute little eyes (on the dolls that my son designed) - they are screen printed! And no, I don't have any materials for screen printing. The Yudu screen printing system that we bought for NueToMe resides in San Jose with my parents. And I wouldn't have used such a huge screen print for such a small item. So, I looked for another solution.

First of all, this came about because I'm trying to reduce the amount of things that I need to do to help my son make these things. While I do plan on teaching him to sew - sewing around tiny little eyes is not the first skill we will be working on. So, I was looking for an easy alternative. I thought about having him draw every face on to each doll... but knowing my son, he would get tired of that process... besides when we tried this, the ink just wasn't bold enough.

So, painting is what came to mind next. Of course, it's hard enough painting small details on paper - on a fabric, it's 10 times harder. And I wanted to set him up for success, not failure. From the techniques I've learned... screen printing was the answer. But I wanted it to be his size - something manageable.

So today while he spent the day at Art Camp and the rest of the day at his dad's work... I experimented with making a screen printing system that he would be able to do. First, I made a screen from an old frame (it's a 4x6 frame), some silver organza fabric I had (I looked at using tulle - but even my smallest seemed like the holes would be too big... it was also important that I found a fabric that we could see through) and my husband's manual staple gun.

I have to make more of these, so I'll try to do a tutorial on the next one. A few things that didn't go as planned... the staples didn't go all the way in - I got over this as they went in most of the way (and I can hammer them flat later if it becomes a problem); a few of the staples poke out the side because the frame was slightly slanted on the side - again I got over it pretty quickly; and there was a good gap between the fabric and the frame where I wrapped it around - nothing a little packing tape couldn't fix.

I tested it out with Lyssie. I drew the basic outline of Robbie's doll pattern several times on a piece of paper and asked her to give them faces. Then I chose two of them that would be the easiest to transfer on to the screen. I put one face on each end of the screen to utilize the screen a little bettwe.
Using a pen (couldn't find a pencil), I traced around her lines (I had her use a thick marker). I then used Mod Podge and painted everything that I didn't want to print (so everywhere except for her lines). Some areas took a few coats to be sure that there weren't any pin holes. I let the screen dry in the window for a few hours. I thought it would have to dry overnight... but being impatient, I tried it anyway and it worked great!
I used acrylic (again, too impatient to wait and buy fabric paint) and it printed up perfectly. So, does anyone know if I heat set acrylic if it'll still wash out of the fabric??? I also used a large rubber spatula to push the paint through the screen. Because the face image was small enough... this worked great - and it was easy to control, which will be important when it is my son doing it.
I'm really excited about showing this to my son. I hope he's as excited as I am. I hope to have him spend some time tomorrow drawing out the faces that he'd like to use. I figure I'll make two to three more screens giving him 6 - 8 faces to choose from when he makes these. Oh - and his finger puppets... he'll have to figure out something for the finger puppets as well.
He's still working toward adopting his animal - so I'm hoping he can make up enough these that we can take him to a Farmer's Market to sell them before the end of summer.

Muffin Tin Monday - Party!

Monday, August 3, 2009

Well, the theme was celebration or party... or son was feeling a bit sick from motion sickness (video games) so their enthusiasm was a bit lacking for this party. We did this on Sunday since we are going to be gone during lunch time all week as Robbie will be attending yet another camp... this one for Multi Media art (sounds fun, doesn't it!). I'm sure there will be plenty of bento lunches though.

Contents: Pirate Booty, edamame, star sandwiches (turkey, bread and cheese cut into stars on a toothpick), green jello, corn muffin with a candle and grapes. We served it with chocolate milk.

Okay, it may not be your idea of a party - but we used cupcake liners and a candle. That has to count for something! My son was too sick to eat any of it (I spoon fed him the jello while he was on the couch) - but Lyssie ate everything (in both tins) except for the jello, edamame and corn muffin.

Yesterday I went to the Urban Craft Uprising and had a great time! I even got a swag bag (although, I left it there at my friend's booth on accident). It was a great show - if you missed it, be sure not to miss the holiday one (hopefully I'll get accepted to that one - but even if I don't, it'll be worth going to).
