What Do You Do?

So, you are laying out a giant quilt and you only have so much room. You also have two little kids that love to play with little fabric squares. Keeping your quilt spread out can be dangerous if the look you are trying to achieve is a pattern that can't easily be put back together. And there is no way you have a chunk of time to sew it all together at once.

Well, here's my solution. Now, I really don't consider myself an experienced quilter - this is just what works for me. Not sure if this is the right way to do it or not.

When I lay the quilt out, I do it on a sheet. This not only keeps the pieces clean... but it makes it easier to pick up once you get the desired look and allows you to work in stages. When I am done, I just fold the sheet over the top of the pieces very carefully.

Then I roll the whole thing up (mine in the picture is a bit wrinkled because my three year old decided to tromp across it - FYI, it survived). You are left with a tube which is much easier to store. I pinned four strips at a time (this is all the pins I had) - so I roll the rest up until I'm ready for more. It's fast and convenient.
I pin the pieces on the side where I need to stitch so that I am sure I'm assembling them correctly.

My big hold up, again, is ironing. These are waiting to be pressed so that they can be sewn together.

i am really in awe of your efforts. i feel rather slapdash! (is that a word??) be careful ironing the multi flower square -pink,orange, blue - it isnt 100% cotton, i got it from a market stall and ironed it tonight. it may wrinkle up a bit. i think it looks really 1930s and like it a lot...even if it doesn't like a hot iron! Thanks Bridget! All squares have been ironed at least once already - so I think it'll be okay. I will keep my eye on it though. Although... sometimes ignorance is bliss :)
