Things that make me happy

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

At the beginning of summer, the kids and I went to San Jose where my family lives... and we made a stop by my Grandmother's house. I was lucky enough to be able to bring home several pieces of my grandfather's pottery. This week as I've been cleaning, I have started to unpack some of them to use for various things. I still have one more box left of planters to unpack. It's been very exciting for me to see his pottery in my home. It brings back some of my best childhood memories.

The ability to keep bonsai was not passed on to me... so cactus was the best I could do. This little mini bonsai pot is one of my favorites. Next to it is his gravy boat - I love the shape of them. They remind me of the Yip Yips from Sesame Street!

I believe the alien looking one is for Ikebana (did I mention that my grandparents are Japanese?). I love the colors of it - another one of my favorite pieces.

You can't tell from this picture, but I also have a tea pot and a matching sugar bowl. The tea pot has a low, flat profile... so it tends to blend in. I've put it with four small tea cups. Perhaps these will get used for a special tea party one of these days.
Most of these pots are sitting up on our mantle above the tv and fireplace. It's the perfect location. Every time I see them I have a warm feeling of family. This pottery makes me happy.
