Tackle it Tuesday - Butterflies!!

Or maybe it should be T-shirt Tuesday. Either way, I did use both. My tshirt scraps and one of the hundreds of used tshirts that I have waiting to become something new. I've had this idea of butterflies in my head for a while now and today, with three hours kid-less (I know!), I thought I'd finally tackle the idea.
Of course, my idea was only for the butterflies. I had no idea what I was going to do with them once I made them. I quickly made a skirt out of a green tshirt and some scraps. I thought the green would be the perfect compliment for the spring butterflies. I love how they look against the soft green color. For the butterflies, I took a tshirt scrap and folded it in half. I then started sewing 4 loops on it in the rough shape of a butterfly. Oh - FYI... a small double layer scrap of knit does not do well in free motion quilting as that would have been my first choice. After I made the shape of the butterfly, I cut around it. I stitched each one on in a loose sketchy looking stitch and continued the stitch off the bottom of the skirt for the butterfly's fly path.
I did have to tack down the top of the highest wing to keep it from completely flopping over. I'm sure this will also help once it has been washed. The colors I used were inspired by my daughter. She was playing with some of her rainbow colored buckets the other day. She had the orange, yellow and green one and the combination reminded me of spring... which I'm so desperately craving right now.
I look forward to trying this skirt on my daughter when she gets home. I'm hoping that I made it her size. Since I didn't use a pattern, it's possible it won't fit. I do plan on using this butterfly design on the dresses for my NueToMe shop. The last few days I've made a few new dresses and hope to list them soon. Sewing this skirt brought a flood of new design ideas and I'm anxious to start working on them.
