Last Minute Birthday Gift

Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Well, it wasn't completely last minute as I made the mushrooms at the beginning of last minute... however, I procrastinated until the day I saw Marlo to make her gift. Luckily, this is the kind of gift that looks great when made last minute! Not only that, but it's a perfect gift when you aren't sure what to get.

This terrarium is made from a thrifted glass jar, two FIMO mushrooms (from FIMO I had on hand), and the rest came from the yard! The best part of this gift was definitely making it though. I made it with my son (who loves Marlo) and he was sooo excited to be part of the gift we were giving her.
The mushrooms stake into the ground so that they can be moved around. I used old sewing machine needles (sharp end in the mushroom) and glued them inside the bottom of the mushroom. Because the needle is tapered, it was necessary to use glue as it would just slide out. But I did bake the mushroom with the needles inside.
I'm addicted to making these little terrariums... and by the way, the ones the kids made are doing just fine. I do need to drill a small hole in the top of them as we are getting a little bit of green starting to show on the bottom of the cork.
Happy Birthday Marlo - I hope you had a great birthday!
