Tackle it Tuesday - Weaving

Tuesday, February 10, 2009

A fellow EtsyRAINer, Selena Eon, uses weaving in many of her designs. I'm a big fan. Lately, she's been working on a design made from recycled plastic bags (it's for a fashion show). She made a loom from a cardboard box to weave the "fabric" that she'll be using. This got me thinking.

Why can't the kids do a little weaving? So, for this Tackle It Tuesday, I'm tackling my tshirt scraps by having the kids (mainly Robbie) weave their own "fabric". I used the cardboard bottom of a case of water bottles for the loom. We cut slits about an inch apart along the long sides.

I cut the tshirts scraps into 3/8 - 1/2 inch strips and Lyssie helped us pull them to make "yarn". See here for a tutorial. Robbie did the rest. He pulled the strips across the loom and secured them in each of the slits along the side.

I was surprised how focused he was. This is a very repetitive project and we chose to make a large loom. But he stuck with it and was thrilled that he ended up with his own piece of "fabric". I tied the ends loosely around the sides so that I could change the edging once we figure out what he wants to make. I've suggested a pillow - but I think he might have loftier plans. For now though, he's happy just admiring it as it as... and it really is quite pretty.

We used quite a bit of knit for this - but sadly, you can't see a difference in my scrap pile(s). But it was a fun exercise. Now I'm hoping to get Robbie to brainstorm idea of other things we can weave.
