Black and White or Color?
Thursday, October 16, 2008
I am spending entirely too much time doing things that I shouldn't be doing... or rather, not enough time doing the things I should be doing. Yep, I'm still struggling with the whole motivation crutch...
Anyhow, I've been doing more drawing here and there. And I'm doing enough drawing that my husband is unable to get them all scanned before I start coloring them. I know, I should scan them first... but really, that requires way to much time. I guess I still feel like there are some that I'm not done with and rather than wait, I decide I need to just finish it. Good? Bad? At this point, I really don't care.

I'm also getting to the point where I think I might start trying to list a few of the originals on Etsy. You know, test the water a bit. I'll probably just start with the small drawings - the ACEOs. But my biggest question is... should I just leave them alone and leave them black and white... or is color better? I'd love to hear some feedback. Of course, I couldn't give an example of the same picture in black and white and color because the color ones I've done... weren't scanned in black and white. And the black and white ones that I have scanned have yet to be colored. I'm torn and so I'm looking for some feedback.
And I'm not sure how many people really read this blog - but I'm willing to offer an original ACEO to a random winner for leaving your feedback - do you prefer color or black and white? This may be really easy to win if I don't have a lot of readers :) I've never done a give-away before... but this seems like the perfect time. Which one will I be giving?... I don't know yet. It's a surprise (to all of us)!
So, leave me your opinion in the comments section of this blog post along with a way for me to contact you. I'll wait a week and then randomly draw a name. If I have international readers - I'll also send international because your feedback is just as important.

Me - I like the black and white. Or I like feet. But I'm drawn to that one for some reason.
I so totally love color, and like your color drawing in your post. You could offer some of both in your shop and see what sells. I find I can never predict :)
Ok I love love love the black and white... I know my mom would love the color if you keep it with just the pop of color, so maybe you should just go with how you feel for each one. The foot one is amazing though! You should totally sell them in Etsy! Good luck
the black & white one! hehe...
hope 2 exchange links w u...
tk cr..
:D
Kayce, to be perfectly honest, I think they both have their place, depending on the drawing. I couldn't pick b&w or color if you paid me. However, I **need** one of the footprint drawings. Print, original, I'm not picky.
Trina
They both look great - but I always like the colored ones better (though it may depend on the subject matter). Thanks for entering my giveway and for your tip!
color color color!
the b&W would look good on a color mat too!
Honestly, I like both, but i'm all for color!!
don't i get my opinion across? ha!
i think it depends on the item you drew... like i couldn't imagine the footprint in a color :) i think that one is perfect as a b&w, but the pear is great with the colors! so i like both options, but the ones you have yet to scan in b&w, you can digitally color i suppose and offer different olors plus b&w in your shop! (how many shops do you have now? haha you're too talented lol)
i dig the footprint too trina!
I love colour and would vote for that option. My personal opinion is there is too much b&w in life (death, taxes, politics, endless PTA meetings) and we can all use colour for a little uplifting. Especially heading into this dreary Seattle winter.
While I do like the foot in b&w, I would love to see it in colour too.
I agree with Lindsey. I think that it would be great to offer them in either black and white or color. I love repetition, myself. I could easily see an awesome line-up of four or five pears, in different colors, framed on a wall. I think it would look beautiful! What are you usig for color? Watercolor could give an interesting, soft contrast to the linear edge of the black lines...
I'm torn. I think the pear looks perfect in color, and might not translate as well in black and white. But the foot would look odd in color! :) So I think it may depend on the specific drawing.
I know, that's not really an answer. :)
I think I'm with Dawn. I love the pear! It's just the right amount of color. There is also something so simple and clean about black and white though.
From a marketing standpoint, a print doesn't have as much value as an original but a "handcolored" print makes every one an original...
Also not an answer but something to think about :)
i like color! they are very cute, and i love quotes.
I love black and white!
But I love how you colored the pear as well. :) I would love the option to have them either in color or black and white. That's what would get my attention!
Love those! I love the colored one, but maybe because it makes sense to have a pop of color in that picture. The foot doesn't really need the color.
I think the touch of color really adds an extra dimension to your art. The black & white design stands out more when accent color is introduced.
That being said, a pure black & white design is striking on its own.
I think your work is gorgeous, and let your images inspire YOU to choose whether it should have color or not.
Here's what I think, you need to do more of these! I love your drawings!
